Switchboards
Your switchboard is the ‘control panel’ of your home’s electrical wiring. If your switchboard is getting on in years, you need to consider upgrading it for many reasons.
If your switchboard is more than 20 years old, it is a fact that it is not built with modern electricity needs in mind. There are no way the same switchboards that powered little more than a dishwasher, small TV, stove and refrigerator 20 years ago can be expected to perform well with all the computers, air conditioners, home theatres, microwaves and pool pumps in our properties today.
Indications that your switchboard has insufficient power supply include power tripping, flickering lights.
Older switchboards also have a greater propensity to short-circuit, meaning that there is a risk of the fuses catching fire, or risk of electric shocks. If your current switchboard still uses replaceable wires on the fuses, it is a safety hazard and needs to be replaced.
Another switchboard essential is the safety switch. A safety switch is a device that is designed to protect you from electric shock from the electricity running through the wiring in your home, a feature not present on older switchboards. They work by cutting off the electricity to a particular area of your home (or your whole home) the very millisecond a leakage is located.
